Are you confused and frustrated on how to create a fabulous interior space? Great planning combined with an amazing design concept will help you create a wonderful space. Designing a space by yourself can be uncharted territory. There are many common interior design mistakes. Using photos to illustrate, here are our top interior design mistakes you should avoid to create a great space.

Using Disproportionate Measurements or Heights

Hanging art or photos at an inappropriate height will give a space a strange appearance. Using furniture that is the incorrect scale will also throw off a room. It is essential to measure all furniture prior to purchasing and to know the dimensions of a space for effective space planning.

Design Tip: Place craft paper cut to the size of the furniture in the space to get a visual on how the pieces will fit!

Ignoring Function

Compromising the functionality of a room for looks is a common pitfall. Elements that enhance the room's purpose should be incorporated into the design of the room. For example, a living room should have good lighting in strategic places. This can be achieved with stylish lighting fixtures as well as placing overhead lighting on dimmer switches. Similarly, the acoustics of a space which contains both a TV and hardwood floors can be enhanced by simply adding a few area rugs and drapery panels.

Design Tip: Place overhead lighting and chandeliers on a dimmer switch.

Overwhelming a space by over furnishing it

Over-furnishing a space is a common mistake that unfortunately creates a cluttered and disorganized look. This mistake can be avoided by sticking to a few key pieces for the room. We suggest to clients that they keep the key pieces neutral because 1) these are generally high ticket items which should stand the test of time & 2) the space flows more freely. Another option is to avoid unnecessary accessories altogether and create just one or two focal points with essential elements such as a fireplace or paint.

Design Tip: Keep it simple - Stick to a few key elements.

Bad lighting

Lighting changes the look of a room dramatically. The right amount of lighting can reveal the true tone of the paint and colors in a space. Lighting can also create focal points in a room and create the ambiance you may be looking for.

Design Tip: Be sure that rooms have various types of lighting i.e. recessed lighting in the ceiling, direction lighting (for fireplace or artwork), table lamps, task lighting (place all on dimmer switches).

Lack of a color scheme

Color coordination can pull an entire home together. In contrast, the lack of a cohesive color scheme will undermine the look and feel of your space. Great use of color can also create focal points to make a space more interesting and visually appealing. Avoid using too many colors and instead choose a few key colors that best convey your style.

Design Tip: Create a cohesive color scheme through out your home. Avoid choosing too many colors.

Underestimating the time or cost of a project

Underestimating the time or cost of a project can complicate the process and even risk its completion. You should leave room for unexpected surprises and costs, as well as the schedule of any sub-contractors. We suggest always hiring a licensed general contractor! You may want to consult with a design professional for an accurate idea of the time and cost involved, which brings us to the next mistake.

Design Tip: It always takes more time and costs more than anticipated. Hire professionals to get an accurate idea.

Not hiring a professional when necessary

There are many unique and custom design elements that can dramatically enhance your space. However, advanced projects will require the assistance of design professionals for the proper and best execution. A trusted professional can also bring you fresh ideas, avoid mistakes and prevent complications you might encounter on your own.

Design Tip: Hire a professional

Avoid these mistakes when designing your next space to make it both functional and visually appealing.
